Went diving in Anilao, and it was one of the best things I’ve ever said “Yes” to in my life. I swam alongside two turtles, got bitten by a fish as large as my face and I saw the entire cast of Nemo (minus the sharks.)

I hate myself for not taking pictures of us in SCUBA gear though (or any GOOD pictures for that matter.) I was too excited that it slipped my mind.

Planet Dive, Anilao. 2012

permalink Today I met a man named Joey who loves to SCUBA dive. He told me that he got into diving after a particularly bad break up when he was younger because he noticed that when he was underwater “Hindi ko na naiisip yung masama. Ang ganda kasi sa ilalim eh. Yung mga away, yung mga problema — I would forget it all when I was diving. It’s just so beautiful that you forget the bad stuff.”
I remember thinking to myself ‘What an interesting old man.’ There I was, drinking my Milo and enjoying my solitude in the beach, when this stranger sits right next to me and starts divulging his life story. I can only hope for the same pride in what I’ve done with my life — that I can confidently sit next to random strangers and tell them about all my adventures. He really was an interesting old man!
Joey said that 70% of the Earth is made up of water — so no matter how much you travel up on land, you haven’t seen much of the world unless you’ve seen what’s hiding beneath it. It started out as a hobby which then turned into a passion.  “Naging dream ko na makadive ako kung kelan ko gusto.”
Fast forward to 2012, Joey now owns a resort in Anilao called Planet Dive. He lives right in front of one of the best coral reserves in the Philippines, runs his own business, and now SCUBA dives for a living. He spends his days looking for different species of octopuses and educating the general public on how to dive safely. Childhood dream = REALITY.
